Castel Health Protection Unit (HPU) is a local team of the Health Protection Agency (HPA) whose job is to protect the residents of Castelshire from communicable diseases and chemical incidents. Combining the latest technology with good old fashioned detective skills, the team investigate notified cases, act quickly to prevent secondary spread and instigate infection control measures.

Leading the team is the Consultant of Communicable Disease Control (CCDC), Mike Burton. He's a straight talking workaholic who always gets the job done but not without ruffling a few feathers! Assisting him is his PA, Rose Corbin, the woman responsible for running the office (and Dr Burton) efficiently. Rhonda Oloo and Gillian Kaplan are the experienced health protection nurses with the aptitude to track down any contact anytime anywhere. And then there is Paul Simmons, an epidemiologist, who as information officer maintains the surveillance system of all reported diseases.

Joining the team are two trainees from the specialist training programme in public health. Ishani Mehta is the ambitious Specialist Register with her sights firmly on a CCDC post, even if it is to her own personal determinant. Specialist Trainee Cynthia Taylor is the new recruit, who has just started her three month rotation. She is determined to prove her worth to get onto the on-call rota. But only if she can avoid her past! Follow both women and the rest of the HPU in each episode as they juggle personal lives and work in the race against time to save lives.....
